Agung Beach Club Review: A Nice Old-School Beach Bar On Nusa Lembongan

agung beach club

Nusa Lembongan and its fellow Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan) are becoming more and more popular with travellers in Bali, and there’s a real beach club scene starting to take off at this offshore location.

So, we were quite excited to send out our review team to Nusa Penida to investigate the Agung Beach Club for our readers. They braved the sea crossing and this is what they learned while they were there.

Introduction – Getting To Agung Beach Club

Agung Beach Club is in Nusa Lembongan. That’s a small island off the coast of mainland Bali. That means if you want to get there, you’ll need to catch a boat either from mainland Bali, mainland Lombok or from one of the local smaller islands.

That’s because there is no airport in the Nusa Islands and there are no other forms of reliable transport that can get you there.

The crossing is usually quite pleasant if you travel during a sunny spell and takes around an hour.

However, if it’s stormy then it can be a much rougher ride and we strongly advise that if you visit the Nusa Islands you ensure that everything of value is in waterproof storage before you go.

Once you reach Nusa Lemobongan, the effort isn’t over, the Agung Beach Club is not in one of the main tourism centres and you will need to get on a bike taxi or rent a scooter to drive out (over some fairly rough roads) to reach the place.

The good news is that there is parking at Agung Beach Club and once you’re ready to enter the club, it’s very obvious how to get in.

What’s Inside Agung Beach Club?

There are some pleasant seating areas, bar and restaurant facilities, a very small pool, and a pair of attractive swings that can be used for Instagram shots on the beach.

Our Review Breakdown For Agung Beach Club

We endeavour to review every beach club in exactly the same fashion. This ensures that we treat every business fairly and that you, our readers, get a review that is always in the same format helping to make comparisons between venues.

Our whole team visits the beach club, though they don’t all visit at the same time or even on the same day, and while they are there – each reviewer scores the beach club from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) against the criteria detailed below.

Then, once everyone has been to the beach club, they meet up and discuss their experiences and take a vote on the final score against each criteria.

Finally, one member of the team is appointed to write up the review on behalf of the team. They take into account the discussions and the final review scores.

Once a beach club review goes live, we aim to have it live for, at least, one year before we revisit and update or amend our comments and scores as necessary.

Pre-Club Advertising

We had never seen any kind of advertising for the Agung Beach Club neither on the Internet nor offline, in print, or billboards, etc.

And that’s a shame because part of the best beach club experience is finding a social hive of activity where you can meet new people and enjoy the buzz of being surrounded by other like minded souls.

Yes, we appreciate that this club is a bit out in the middle of nowhere, but that seems to us even more incentive to advertise.

Location

Nusa Penida isn’t particularly hard to get to and there are fast boat and ferry services from several ports in Bali, though depending on where you stay on the mainland, you may have to endure a long trip in the Bali traffic to get to a port.

However, the fact that this beach club isn’t readily accessible when you reach the island is a bit of a drawback and bouncy trips on rough roads aren’t our favourite way to start a day at a beach club.

The club’s position on the Northern side of Nusa Lembongan means that you can get a semi-decent sunset view but not as good as you would get on the West Coast.

Booking Process & Seating Options

There is no way of making a reservation at this beach club, which shouldn’t come as a surprise when you realize that their “website” is their Instagram account.

We confess, we really don’t get how businesses in 2025 still don’t have a website or reservation system. While these were once expensive and difficult to implement – you can get a company in Indonesia to build something for a couple of hundred dollars now.

Any beach club as remote as this one, owes it to its customers to have a booking system, so they can feel secure about rocking up at the door and getting a seat.

Rating:

Entry Fee

In keeping with all the best beach clubs in Bali, this beach club does not charge an entrance fee. We heartily approve of this as it means you can go inside, and get a feel for the vibe without having to pay for that “privilege”.

There’s really no excuse for entrance fees at beach clubs – you wouldn’t expect a pub or restaurant to charge you to walk through the door, you shouldn’t accept it at beach clubs.

So, that’s a strong positive for Agung Beach Club.

Rating:

Minimum Spend

There is no minimum spend at Agung Beach Club and while at first glance that sounds like good news – after all, it means you don’t have to spend X amount of money just to sit in a nice seat, it’s not all upside.

And that’s because without a minimum spend, beach clubs don’t take deposits and without deposits, there’s no incentive to have a good booking system and even less to hold a reserved seat for even 5 minutes beyond the time it was reserved for.

Given how easy it is for circumstances beyond your control to delay you in Bali, we much prefer a minimum spend agreement and a deposit to secure our seats for us.

Rating:

Welcome And Security

You will be given a warm and friendly Balinese welcome when you arrive at the Agung Beach Club. It’s a very relaxed place and the laidback charm of the staff are a big part of its appeal.

However, we didn’t see any kind of security search and that’s a downside in our book. Sure, it’s faster than going through your bag but these searches help to keep everybody inside a club safe and that’s worth a minor amount of inconvenience.

Rating:

Inclusions

They will happily lend you a towel for free at Agung Beach Club and as you’re not committed to a minimum spend or entrance fee, that’s fair enough.

However, we still prefer our beach clubs to offer some premium services even if that means a minimum spend commitment.

Rating:

Service

The service is really very good for a remote island beach club and while it won’t ever match the 5-star hotels and big beach clubs on the mainland, the staff are a real credit to this place.

We found them to be bright, cheerful, friendly and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu and the surrounding area.

They were happy to help customize orders too if there were dietary restrictions for members of our group.

Rating:

Entertainment

This is a beach club in the middle of nowhere, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that they don’t lay on a bunch of entertainment (unless you count the Bali dogs wandering around the beach).

It just wouldn’t be economical and to be fair, it’s not really what this place is about. It’s meant to be a bit of an escape from the party scene and a spot where you can chill out for the day with friends.

Rating:

Pool Quality

The pool is clean and well-maintained and we certainly had no qualms about using it. However, we can’t stress enough that the pool is very small.

It’s a place where you jump in for a couple of minutes to cool down when the humidity and heat get to be a bit too much, it’s not somewhere you try to grind out laps for an hour.

And while you can swim in the ocean at Agung Beach Club, we’d recommend that you don’t as it’s not the safest place to swim and even experienced swimmers can get into trouble.

Rating:

Menu/Drinks Pricing

The menu at Agung Beach Club encompasses a wide range of both local and international cuisine and all of the dishes are very reasonably priced.

It’s nice to see a beach club playing to the strength of lower wage costs and rents and passing on those savings to their customers.

Rating:

Food And Drink Quality

While they probably won’t win any awards for the cuisine served at this beach club, we found their food to be very tasty and pleasantly presented.

It’s the sort of meal that you’d be happy to get in the pub back home.

We also found that their drinks were nicely presented and more than strong enough.

Rating:

Sunset View

There’s no doubt that the view from this beach club is nice and on a clear day, you can see Mount Agung on the mainland rising above everything else in sight.

However, the sunset isn’t the greatest as it’s on the wrong coast for the best view of the sunset. The same is true of the sunrise, but, as they’re not open at sunrise, that’s not likely to bother their guests.

Rating:

Music And Ambiance

The music at this beach club is piped in and it’s meant as a backdrop to conversation and to blend easily with the sound of the waves on the sands of the beach.

It does that job admirably and this beach club isn’t set up for partying, it’s about long, lazy days drinking cheap cocktails as the world turns.

Rating:

Payment Options

You can pay by card or cash in this beach club and we’d recommend that you have some cash on you, just in case the card machine goes down.

There are no ATMs within walking distance of the Agung Beach Club which could make life awkward if you need cash.

There is also no sign up advertising QRIS payments which is a bit of a shame as it’s our preferred way to pay in Indonesia.

Rating:

Exit Process

This is a very small beach club and you can either walk out the way you came in or just walk down the beach until you want to come off.

You will be wished a warm goodbye by the staff as you leave and that’s exactly as it should be.

Rating:

Transportation

They don’t have Grab or Gojek services on Nusa Lembongan which means you will either drive yourself to Agung Beach Club or have a driver drop you off.

If you have a driver drop you off, make sure to ask them for their phone number so that you can arrange a lift back.

It’s not that far to walk until the nearest town, but it’s far enough after a day of drinks in the Bali sun.

Rating:

Social Media Presence

They have a well-maintained Instagram page which is as it should be as they have no website. It’s not updated all that regularly but it is updated.

We felt that the page offered a fair reflection of what the club is like and what’s available there.

Other/General Comments

We love the beach bar vibe of this place and it feels like a bit of old Bali that has managed to fly under the radar of the development hungry side of the island.

It’s a great place to while away a day with some good food, cold drinks and enjoying the peace and quiet of Nusa Lembongan.

Our Overall Opinion Of Agung Beach Club

We really enjoyed spending time at Agung Beach Club. While it may be closer to an old school beach bar than it is to the big name beach clubs on the mainland, it’s the sort of place that anyone would be happy to discover on their holiday.

You can rock up, grab a cold beer and enjoy a glorious view out over the beach. When you’re a bit warm, you can jump into the small pool and cool off.

It’s an ideal stop if you’re exploring Nusa Lembongan and while we wouldn’t travel to the island just for this beach club, we would always stop at Agung Beach Club if were on Nusa Lembongan. It’s great.

FAQs

Can You Swim At Agung Beach Club?

There is a pool area at this beach club, but it’s not really big enough for swimming. It’s more a spot where you jump in for a few minutes to cool off in the middle of the day.

You can swim in the ocean on the beach at Agung Beach Club, but we would point out that the currents in Nusa Lembongan can be extremely unpredictable and even strong swimmers can find themselves in real trouble when swimming in the ocean.

We’d recommend that you get any swimming in before you arrive at this beach club and just enjoy the sun and the vibe, instead.

What Can You Do At Agung Beach Club?

You can take a dip in the pool at Agung Beach Club, have fun on the beach, eat and drink from the club’s bar and restaurant menu.

Is Agung Beach Club A Family-Friendly Venue?

Yes, children are welcome at Agung Beach Club. However, it’s important to note that they haven’t set up or got any child-specific features and your children will be expected to entertain themselves.

We would also note that parents are expected to keep an eye on their children at all times, both for the safety of their children and to ensure that their kids aren’t annoying any of the other guests.

Who Owns Agung Beach Club?

The ownership structure of Agung Beach Club is not in the public domain, but it seems reasonable to assume based on our experiences at this beach club that it is locally owned and managed.

Final Thoughts On Agung Beach Club

We really liked Agung Beach Club and while it’s not going to give places like FINNS Beach Club any competition in the near future, it’s a fabulous spot to stop and let the world go by if you’re in Nusa Lembongan.

While we wouldn’t visit Lembongan just for this beach club, we would always call in at Agung Beach Club if we found ourselves on that island.

Sometimes, you just want a beach bar vibe, that’s fully relaxed and got that strong vibe of island life and that’s Agung Beach Club to a T.
