AMP Beach Club Review: Good Times On Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a long way to go for a beach club, after all, you need to catch a boat from mainland Bali and then navigate your way to whatever side of the island you need to be on.

However, in our experience, there are some good beach clubs on the Nusa Islands and while we wouldn’t travel all that way just for a beach club, the islands are worth seeing in their own right.

So, our team were pretty happy to jump on a fast boat and explore the AMP Beach Club for you and this is what they learned on their trip.

Introduction – Getting To AMP Beach Club

We should note that this beach club is, in fact, part of the AMP Beach House which is an upmarket hotel on Nusa Penida. As such, they do give priority to hotel guests when it comes to assigning seating, etc.

Getting to Nusa Penida means catching either a fast boat or a ferry from one of the various ports in mainland Bali that serve the Nusa Islands.

We recommend a fast boat as it doesn’t cost much more than a ferry and as the name suggests, it’s a whole lot faster.

The journey is pleasant enough in calm seas, but if it’s stormy, it can be a very rough ride. It’s important to ensure any possessions that can be damaged by sea water are wrapped in waterproof containers, just in case.

Once you’re on the island, this beach club is in one of the main towns and it’s not too hard to get to by scooter taxi or scooter.

We’d recommend that you stay nearby if you want to enjoy the sunset here or even in the AMP Beach House if your budget will stretch to it.

When you arrive, getting inside is easy and you’ll be given the usual cheerful Balinese welcome.

What’s Inside AMP Beach Club?

This beach club has a swimming pool (though it’s not an infinity pool) as well as bar and restaurant facilities, there is also direct access to the beach from the club.

Our Review Breakdown For AMP Beach Club

We are on a mission to review every single beach club in Bali and in order to do this in a useful and fair manner, we try to keep all of our reviews in the same format.

That means the club owners are always judged on the same criteria and our reviews all follow a format that allows our readers to compare different beach clubs easily.

Our team are sent out to visit the beach club but they don’t usually all go together or at the same time or on the same day.

They grade the beach club from 1 (the worst) to 5 (the best) in a series of categories (as laid out below) and make notes about their time at the club.

Once everyone in the team has been to the club, they all meet up to discuss their experiences and to vote on a final grade from 1 to 5 in each category.

Finally, a team member takes on the task of writing up the review and they include the voted grades and reflect the discussions that were had in this review.

Then, the review goes live for a period of, at least, a year before we revisit the club and revise the scores (if necessary).

Pre-Club Advertising

We’re big fans of pre-club advertising, it helps to attract larger audiences which, in turn, help to ensure that the social aspect of going to a beach club is good.

If you’ve ever sat in an empty beach club, you will know what we mean by this, in a place like Atlas, for example, it leaves you feeling stranded even when the entertainment is OK and you’re getting good service.

So, we’re sad to report that AMP Beach Club doesn’t advertise its presence (as far as we can tell) either online or offline except as part of the hotel it belongs to.

We do understand that there are challenges associated with advertising a beach club in the Nusa Islands, but even so, we’d like to see some sort of effort made.

Location

It’s in Nusa Penida and that means for most people, the location of this beach club isn’t going to be super convenient.

If you have the time to explore the Nusa Islands on your holiday, we recommend that you do and we recommend staying for a few nights as the day trips are horribly over-touristed affairs.

You can beat the crowds and enjoy the idyllic peace of the islands when you come and set your own agenda.

The good news is that the beach club is almost on the Western side of the island and it does have a view at sunset.

It’s also inside a major town (for Nusa Penida) and that means it’s very accessible, unlike some beach clubs in the Nusa Islands which require long rides over rocky terrain to get to.

Booking Process & Seating Options

We couldn’t even find a website for the AMP Beach House online (it’s advertised on all the usual booking websites) and there’s definitely not one for the beach club.

And frankly, we don’t get it. It’s 2025. A website is not a huge cash investment, you can set one up for, quite literally, pennies.

Without a website, of course, there is no booking process for this beach club which means you have to turn up on the day and hope for the best.

Given that this beach club is on a remote island, this seems like a terrible plan and it means you’re only going to visit this beach club if you happen to be passing by.

Rating:

Entry Fee

There is no entrance fee at the AMP Beach Club which is in keeping with all the best beach clubs in Bali.

However, it’s important to note that the beach club will always give priority to guests who are staying at the AMP Beach House (as it should, it’s a perk of their guests).

So, on the busiest days, the only way to get a seat at this beach club is to book a $150+ a night hotel room. Which some might consider to be a steep entrance fee though obviously, a room comes with a lot of privileges beyond the beach club.

Rating:

Minimum Spend

There is no minimum spend requirement at the AMP Beach Club, you only have to pay for the things that you consume.

However, this is not all upside, when there is no minimum spend at a beach club, there is no incentive for the club to have a booking system (see above) and if you do manage to make a booking – there’s no incentive for them to hold your seat for you.

A minimum spend usually means you pay a deposit, which means that the club has already profited from your business and they will hold a seat as long as possible.

Without that, their incentive is to give your seat to the first paying guest who turns up on their doorstep and usually, they do.

Welcome And Security

As you’d expect our here in Nusa Penida, the staff at this beach club will give you an enormously friendly welcome in Balinese style.

However, as with many of the more remote beach clubs, there’s simply no security presence and that means no bag checks.

While we acknowledge that the risk of any incident, particularly in the Nusa Islands, is extremely low – we believe that this is, in part, due to venues taking the time to ensure that people don’t bring anything dangerous inside.

So, we like bag checks and we wish that more places would do them.

Rating:

Inclusions

If you are a hotel guest, then you will find that the beach club provides you with a free towel and priority service. That’s fair enough, the room rates here are certainly high enough to merit some special treatment.

Walk-in visitors, on the other hand, aren’t quite so lucky and while they are welcome to use the pool and shower facilities, they will need to rent a towel from the beach club for a small fee.

We think that’s fair enough mind you, there’s no entrance fee or minimum spend, which means the club has to charge for each expense it incurs.

Rating:

Service

The service is, as we would expect from a high-end establishment, very good at AMP Beach Club and while it’s not quite on par with the very best beach clubs or the 5-star brand name hotel beach clubs, it’s more than good enough.

The staff here are proud of where they work, they’re friendly and helpful and we found them knowledgeable, not just about the menu and beach club but also about Nusa Penida, itself.

They’re a credit to the AMP Beach House and we would be happy to recommend visiting just for the service.

Rating:

Entertainment

As with most hotel beach clubs, the emphasis here is on a chilled out day by the beach rather than parties and big moments.

So, in keeping with that, there’s no entertainment on offer at this beach club, just piped music and we’re OK with that – not every day needs to be a party, right?

Rating:

Pool Quality

We thought the pool area was very nice for what it is. It’s not an infinity pool which is a bit of a shame as they are right on the shoreline but it does make a pleasant focal area for the club.

We found the pool to be very well-maintained and that the water was clean and pleasant for swimming in.

You can swim in this pool, but if the place gets crowded, you may find it’s too full for swimming and is better used for quick cooling dip in the heat of a Bali day.

Kids are welcome to use the pool, but they should be under adult supervision at all times.

Rating:

Menu/Drinks Pricing

While we do appreciate that this is a high class resort, it is in Nusa Penida where things tend to be cheaper than they on the mainland because of the lower rents and staff costs (which offset the slightly higher prices of imported goods).

However, while the prices here weren’t extortionate as they are at some of the beach clubs in Ungasan, they were pretty high for Nusa Penida.

You could argue that this is something to do with the convenient setting in a town, but we think the prices are still on the high side.

Rating: 4/5

Food And Drink Quality

The good news is that they don’t stint on the quality of the food here and each dish that we sample was delicious and well-presented.

We also found that the mixed drinks looked good and were cold and strong enough (we really don’t like watery drinks that cost an arm and a leg), so that was definitely a good thing.

They were a little slow to deliver the meals, but we assume that this is because everything is made from scratch.

Rating:

Sunset View

It’s not the best sunset view in Bali because part of Nusa Lembongan obscures the ocean horizon, but it is pretty good and you won’t be sorry that you pull up here in the early evening for sundowners.

We recommend getting here a couple of hours before sunset though as it will get busy and priority for seating is for hotel guests, which may leave latecomers standing around rather than enjoying some comfy cushions.

The sunset in Bali is a really big deal and it’s nice to get a good view of it when you’re at a beach club.

Rating:

Music And Ambiance

The music at the AMP Beach Club is piped in and it serves as quiet background music, in fact, it might even be a bit too quiet, we barely noticed it while we were there.

That’s not always a bad thing if you just want some conversation, but music can give a place some identity too and there’s nothing wrong with it being present and not overwhelming.

Rating:

Payment Options

You can pay by cash or card throughout the AMP Beach Club and we were pleased to note that the bill came quickly as did our change, there’s something really frustrating about being made to wait around when you want to leave, so we’re glad that didn’t happen.

However, we didn’t see any signs up for QRIS payments and we always think that’s a missed opportunity, it’s our favourite way to pay here in Indonesia and while not all tourists have access to the system, all expats and locals do.

Rating:

Exit Process

One of the nice things about small beach clubs like AMP Beach Club is that the exit process just can’t be complicated.

You walk back out the way that you came in and that’s about all. As you leave the staff will wish you a cheerful farewell and then you’re back out in the little town here.

If you’re staying nearby, you could even walk home easily, while the roads and pavements aren’t great (as with the mainland) there’s much less traffic for a pedestrian to worry about.

Rating:

Transportation

Given the state of the roads here, we don’t recommend driving home, particularly after a few drinks but there is scooter parking at the club and you can reclaim your bike as you leave, if you must.

Instead, we’d recommend arranging a scooter taxi to pick you up and whisk you home at the end of the night if it’s too far for you to walk.

There’s no Grab or Gojek service in the Nusa Islands, for now, so if you haven’t booked a taxi, ask the folks at the beach club to help you, but expect to pay a little premium for doing so.

Rating:

Social Media Presence

They do have social media at this beach club, but as you might expect for a club with no website, it’s clearly an afterthought and not something they place any real priority on.

As we go to press, the last update on their Instagram was about 9 weeks ago. The photos aren’t very helpful anyway, though. There are almost no people in them and they tend to be of specific things rather than the beach club experience.

This could be done much better and without too much additional effort.

Other/General Comments

This is a hotel beach club and it shows. They’re very good at the service, food and hotel vibe. But there’s not much above and beyond that to distinguish it from other beach clubs even out here on Nusa Penida.

Our Overall Opinion Of AMP Beach Club

We had a nice time at AMP Beach Club and we would definitely come back if we were in the neighbourhood. We might even stay at the swanky resort if we were feeling flush.

But it’s definitely a place to enjoy because you’re in Nusa Penida and not a reason to come to the island in the first place.

As long as you keep that in mind, we think you’ll enjoy AMP Beach Club too.

FAQs

Can You Swim At AMP Beach Club?

Yes, you can swim at AMP Beach Club and they have a very nice pool area where you can swim pretty well if there aren’t too many people around.

It’s not the biggest pool, though, and if the club is very busy as it might be around sunset, you may have to content yourself with jumping in the water to cool off.

There is beach access at this club, so you could swim in the ocean, but we’d urge you to exercise real caution when swimming on Nusa Penida as the currents can be unpredictable and even strong swimmers can be pulled out to sea.

What Can You Do At AMP Beach Club?

The AMP Beach Club is a nice place for a dip in a swimming pool, to relax in the sun, and to eat and drink for the venue’s hospitality facilities.

It’s part of an upmarket resort and as such, it’s more designed for a chill out day by the beach than it is for partying hard.

Is AMP Beach Club A Family-Friendly Venue?

Yes, the AMP Beach Club is a family-friendly venue as is the resort that it’s attached to. Children are welcome everywhere in the facility.

However, as with most beach clubs in Bali, there are no special facilities for kids at this beach club and they will need to entertain themselves when not in the pool.

There are also no lifeguards on duty on the beach, so it’s very important that you keep an eye on your children if they are playing in the sand or anywhere near the ocean.

You are also expected to ensure that your kids don’t become a nuisance for other patrons of the venue.

Who Owns AMP Beach Club?

The ownership of AMP Beach Club and AMP Beach House which is the controlling business is not in the public domain. We believe this property to be owned by an Indonesian group but we cannot confirm this.

Final Thoughts On AMP Beach Club

The team had a nice time at the AMP Beach Club but it is very much a hotel beach club. If you’re wandering past the place, you should definitely stop in if you’re in the mood for a little beach side pampering.

But we definitely wouldn’t recommend crossing the ocean just to get to this beach club. We don’t review resorts on this site, but the AMP Beach House looks like a very nice place to stay and you would probably appreciate the beach club facility as part of a mini-break or longer stay on the island.

And as that’s what it is designed for, a facility for hotel guests, AMP Beach Club does a good job for what it is.
