Baruna Beach Club Review: A Very Small Hotel Beach Club In Lovina

It’s fair to say that Bali’s beach club scene is mainly centred around the beach towns on the South of the island – Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu/Ungasan, in particular.

However, there are beach clubs popping up all over the island, even in the North, which is not usually on most people’s Bali itinerary.

So, when we heard that there was a new beach club, the Baruna Beach Club, to be found on the grounds of the Lovina Haven Boutique Hotel, our team was only too happy to pack a bag and head North for a day or two to try it out for you. This is what they learned while they were there.

Introduction – Getting To Baruna Beach Club

Lovina is in North Bali, and it’s a very long drive from most of the popular tourist towns and spots in Bali. These are mainly the Southern Beach Towns and Ubud.

However, there is a good reason that many people make the pilgrimage to Lovina from these towns, all the same. Lovina is the home of dolphin watching on the island.

And the Lovina Haven Boutique Hotel, where this beach club is located, is directly opposite the main pick-up points for dolphin watchers in the area.

That means Baruna Beach Club is conveniently located for this part of Bali, and there’s plenty of parking at the resort for those who choose to drive themselves or hire a driver for the day to get to Lovina.

Once you arrive at the resort, the staff will be only too happy to welcome you and ensure that you find a spot to chill by the pool.

Our Review Breakdown For Baruna Beach Club

As with all of our beach club reviews, we aim to conduct the review process on the fairest terms possible for both our readers and the beach club owners.

That means we use exactly the same procedure as we have used on all the other beach clubs that we’ve reviewed or will review on this site.

Our team visits the beach club to be reviewed and then marks it on a scale of 1 (worst) to 5 (best) against the criteria listed below.

After all the team has visited (and they may not go together or even on the same day) then they meet up to discuss their experiences and to vote on the final score in each category.

Then, a member of the team is assigned to write up our review. They will ensure that they reflect the discussions and the final grades fairly.

Finally, the review goes live on our website, and it will stay there until such a point as we revisit the club (it will be, at least, one year after the initial visit) and change our grades, comments, etc.

Pre-Club Advertising

We feel fairly strongly that beach club days are social experiences at their core, and thus, the best beach clubs are those with the most people inside.

Pre-club advertising helps to draw bodies through the door and to contribute to that awesome atmosphere of a Bali beach club.

Sadly, in the case of Baruna Beach Club, we barely knew that it existed, and it was only during our research for this website that we discovered its existence.

While we appreciate that smaller beach clubs may experience challenges when it comes to advertising in an economical fashion, they’re not going to grow into bigger beach clubs unless they rise up and meet those challenges.

Location

Let’s not beat around the bush, Lovina is not the easiest place to get to and you’re certainly not going to pop out to the Baruna Beach Club on a day trip from Canggu.

If you intend to head North for the dolphins or on your way to the Kintamani Highlands or West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island, you’re probably going to spend a night or two in Lovina.

Assuming that’s the case, the journey can be bearable as long as you avoid the worst times of day for traffic (we’d set out very early in the morning, before the sun is up, ideally).

Once you arrive in Lovina, this beach club is conveniently located on the shore front near where the dolphin watching boats come in and go out.

Unfortunately, Lovina is on the wrong side of the island for a glorious sunset, and it’s not even particularly well-suited to a glorious sunrise, either.

There is parking at this beach club, which can come in handy as you won’t want to go looking for your bike after a few cocktails and a day by the pool.

Booking Process & Seating Options

There is no website for this beach club, and in keeping with all other beach clubs in 2025 without a website, we take a dim view of this.

There’s really no excuse for not cobbling together a website in 2025. It’s cheap and easy, and makes it simple to take bookings.

Oddly, though, you can make bookings for this beach club on other websites. They sell several “pass” options (more on this in a minute), which can be used to secure a seat, though there’s no indication when you book that you’ve reserved a seat, and it may be that the pass entitles you to entry but not a daybed.

Rating:

Entry Fee

There is an entrance fee at this beach club, and their basic “One Day Pass” is 150,000 IDR (that’s $10 USD or $15 AUD).

However, this includes free entry to the beach club, free entry to their gym and fitness centre, a free drink (cocktails and beers are included), a towel, and parking and Wi-Fi.

While we’re not fans of charging an entrance fee at beach clubs, we do appreciate that they’ve tried to pack this fee with additional value, and it’s not just a charge for walking through the door.

They also do a 7-day pass, which is only 750,000 IDR and includes the same benefits times seven, yes, including the welcome cocktail. That’s pretty good value for money if you intend to spend a week in Lovina at this beach club, which you probably don’t.

They also have an odd marriage package and floating breakfast promo, both of which also include beach club access.

Rating:

Minimum Spend

There is no minimum spend requirement at this beach club, which is a good thing. After all, they’ve charged you to walk through the door; they should give you a nice seat after that.

However, this also means there’s no financial incentive to open a website and implement their own booking system, and that means you can’t book the seat that you want or even be certain of a seat when you arrive.

We like the minimum spend system because it ensures that we can enjoy a comfortable time at a beach club without worrying about losing our seats.

Rating:

Welcome And Security

This is a hotel beach club, and as you might expect, you get a very pleasant Balinese welcome when you arrive at the front desk.

They’re also pretty efficient when it comes to reviewing your passes (or selling you a pass if you didn’t get one in advance).

However, there’s no security check of any kind at this beach club, and we’d prefer that there was one.

Yes, we know the odds of an incident in Lovina are minuscule, but we feel that part of keeping the odds low is paying attention to the safety of your guests. Security checks are easy to implement and don’t cost the Earth.

Rating:

Inclusions

We’ve touched on this already, but the entrance fee includes a towel, access to the shower facilities, free entry to the beach club and to their gym and fitness centre, and it includes a welcome drink. Overall, that’s a pretty good set of inclusions for $10 USD ($15 AUD).

However, there are no tiered service options, and even a small entrance fee can deter guests who have options where there is no entrance fee, even in Lovina.

Rating:

Service

This is a hotel beach club, and as you’d expect, the service is pretty good. No, it doesn’t have the polish of the big brand 5-star hotels in the South of the island, but that’s not what it’s about, either.

This is a small boutique hotel with a beach club that aims to cater to lazy beach days in Bali without much on top, and the staff deliver that very well, indeed.

Rating:

Entertainment

This is a beach club that was built with chilling out, not parties, in mind, and thus, it’s got no entertainment at all.

That’s fine by us, if we’re in Lovina looking for a relaxed day by the pool with friends, this is the kind of vibe we’d be looking for.

Rating:

Pool Quality

The pool area is attractive enough at this beach club. It’s clean and well-maintained, and we can’t imagine it ever getting so busy in this part of Lovina that you wouldn’t be able to swim here.

It’s not the biggest pool, there’s not a great view of the ocean, but overall, we’d be happy to spend time here when we’re in Lovina.

Rating:

Menu/Drinks Pricing

We’d say that the Baruna Beach Club’s pricing is mainly in line with the other beach clubs on the island, which is a bit of a shame as the costs of running a business in Lovina should be appreciably lower than in the South of the island.

We didn’t feel ripped off at the Baruna Beach Club, but we did expect a little bit better value for money than we got.

Rating:

Food And Drink Quality

The food was tasty and the portions were of a decent size, however, there’s no doubt that they won’t be winning any awards for culinary excellence either.

The drinks were cold and certainly strong enough to represent decent value for money. There was no happy hour on offer, though.

Rating:

Sunset View

This part of the island is not ideally positioned for great sunset or sunrise views. The sky does light up, but the sun doesn’t sit directly over the horizon.

That’s a bit of a shame, as there’s no doubt that sunset is a huge visual treat for those choosing beach clubs in the Southwest of the island, like those in Canggu, Seminyak, etc.

Rating:

Music And Ambience

There is piped music in this beach club, and it neither adds to nor subtracts from the overall ambience, which is chilled and laid-back.

Rating:

Payment Options

You can pay by cash or card at this beach club, but we didn’t notice any options for payment via QRIS, which feels like a missed opportunity as it’s a popular way to pay for locals and expats.

Rating:

Exit Process

This isn’t the biggest beach club in Bali, and leaving is very much a question of just wandering back through the resort.

The staff will give you a cheerful farewell as you go.

Rating:

Transportation

This is Lovina, and there’s no Grab or Gojek service. So, hopefully, you brought your own transport or are staying within walking distance.

If you really do need a taxi, talk to staff in the beach club, they can help you get one but it will come at a bit of a premium.

Rating:

Social Media Presence

The club does have an Instagram account, but it’s possibly the worst that we’ve ever seen. With just 6 posts and three of those highlighting promotions, it’s impossible to tell what the beach club will be like from this.

Overall, while we do understand that there are challenges with running small beach clubs, there’s no excuse for not taking a few photos and putting them online. It’s something that anyone with a smartphone can do, and nobody who owns a beach club doesn’t have a smartphone.

Other/General Comments

Baruna Beach Club is a small town hotel, beach club, and that’s just fine. If you bear that in mind when you visit, you should have a very pleasant experience at this club.

However, if you come in the mood for a party, you’re going to find that even in Lovina, there are better venues.

Our Overall Opinion Of Baruna Beach Club

It won’t be one of the most memorable days you’ve had in Bali (unless you went dolphin watching or mountain climbing first), but there’s no doubt that the Baruna Beach Club is pleasant enough.

It’s a nice spot for chilling by the pool and enjoying some simple food and drinks with friends.

We would never recommend travelling to Lovina just for this place, but if you’re in the neighbourhood, it’s nice enough to spend a few hours in.

FAQs

Can You Swim At Baruna Beach Club?

Yes, there’s a pleasant pool area at the Lovina Haven Boutique Hotel, which doubles as a pool for the Baruna Beach Club. It’s clean and well-maintained, and you will find it’s rarely busy enough to interfere with doing lengths at this beach club.

There is also direct access to the beach from this beach club, and you’re allowed to swim at Lovina Beach. Be warned that this place is close to the mooring point for dolphin watching, so you need to keep an eye out for boats, but they don’t usually come too close, and the snorkelling is quite good further down the beach.

What Can You Do At Baruna Beach Club?

This is very much a hotel beach club, which means that the vibe is chill by the sea and the pool, rather than party hard all day long.

You can enjoy swimming in the pool, walking along the beach, swimming in the ocean, and dining on food and drinks from the menu here.

Is Baruna Beach Club A Family-Friendly Venue?

Yes, as you’d expect from a resort, this beach club is entirely family-friendly throughout, and you are welcome to bring your children with you.

However, there are no staff tasked to ensure the safety of your children, and you will need to take responsibility for them when they are playing in the pool or by the sea.

You will also be expected to ensure that your children are playing in such a way that they do not annoy other guests.

Finally, there are no specific child-friendly facilities for the children to use, and they will need to use their imaginations for play beyond splashing in the pool.

Who Owns Baruna Beach Club?

The ownership of Baruna Beach Club is not in the public domain. It seems likely to us that this beach club is owned by local businesspeople, given the absence of a website, social media, etc.

Final Thoughts On Baruna Beach Club

This is very much a hotel beach club facility, and that’s fine if you just want to stop somewhere for a quick swim, grab a bite to eat and then get back out to exploring North Bali.

We can’t imagine anyone choosing to pack their bags for the long journey to Lovina just to visit the Baruna Beach Club, but if you’re in for a spot of dolphin watching, there are very few facilities as well placed to where the boats leave and return for that exercise.

Overall, Baruna Beach Club won’t blow your mind, but it’s a pleasant way to spend a part of the day in Lovina.
