Cocoon Bali Review: Is It A Beach Club Or A Pool Club?

Cocoon Beach Club is in Seminyak, Bali but oddly, it’s not on the beach. So, we sent out our team to visit this “beach club” and see if it was worthy of the title.

Introduction – Getting To Cocoon

Cocoon is near Double Six Beach in Seminyak, Bali and it’s relatively straightforward to get there in a Grab or Gojek or driving yourself.

There is onsite valet parking, for a fee, or you can park nearby and walk to the club.

Where Is Cocoon? Pantai Double Six, Jl. Arjuna No.66, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80361

Website: Cocoon

Opening Hours: Open daily, every day except for Nyepi, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

What’s Inside Cocoon?

Cocoon has a pool, a sports bar, a restaurant, and a garden terrace deck. There is a variety of seating throughout this club and not all of it requires a minimum spend.

Our Review Breakdown For Cocoon

We review every beach club that we visit in Bali using the same criteria. Our reviewers visit the club and then rank the club from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) in 20 different categories.

In order to ensure that our published review score is fair to the club, we vote on the final scores before we release our review.

Once the review is live on our site, we will then re-review the site, at least, one year after the original review.

All of our reviews are carried out independently and we receive no incentives from the clubs regarding our ratings or any other aspect of a review.

Pre-Club Advertising

To be fair, we didn’t know Cocoon even existed when we started this project, which means that this Seminyak spot isn’t exactly killing it with online advertising.

Nor have we seen anything offline, which might explain why this often isn’t the busiest day club in Bali and it’s definitely something that they should consider in the future.

Beach clubs need customers to give them an atmosphere and without that atmosphere, it can feel like being the only person at the party, even if the club is delivering in other areas.

Rating:

Location

We think if a business bills itself as a beach club, it ought to be on the beach (even if it’s only a small part of the club) which might be next to the beach or on the sand itself.

Cocoon isn’t on the beach in Seminyak, in fact, it’s a short walk from the beach. We don’t understand why they don’t call themselves a “pool club” rather than a “beach club”.

There are plenty of other pool clubs in Bali and many of them are very good.

So, we’re docking points for not being on the beach but otherwise, this part of Seminyak is very easy to reach (though the traffic can be nightmarish) and it’s within walking distance of plenty of other restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

Booking Process & Seating Options

This club in Bali has a decent booking facility on the website and it’s very clear about how much you will need to invest as a minimum spend to sit at any given seat.

You can also, unusually, book seats with no minimum spend which is a nice touch.

However, when we book a seat that we’re going to spend 500,000 IDR to 1,500,000 IDR on, we want to know where it is, exactly, inside the venue and there’s no map.

“Somewhere near the pool” might be the best seat in the house or the worst. It’s not that hard (or expensive) in 2024 to get an interactive map added to your website.

Rating:

Entry Fee

One thing we definitely like about this pool club is that it has no entrance fee (something that we encourage all beach clubs to do – there’s no excuse for not letting people in the door to take a look before they commit to spending money there).

And there are several areas inside where you can sit without having to agree to a minimum spend, in these areas you still need to buy a drink or some food, but you don’t have to spend any more than you want to.

Rating:

Minimum Spend

There are minimum spend areas inside this pool club but this only includes seats by the pool. You can sit in any of the three other parts of this club (bar, restaurant and garden terrace) without agreeing to a minimum spend.

This put Cocoon onto our Bali’s best beach clubs with no minimum spend list.

The minimum spend is clearly stated on the website and ranges from 500,000 IDR for a single person daybed to a reasonable 1,500,000 IDR for a 6-person day bed.

We don’t find these charges to be unreasonable given the overall quality of the club’s facilities and the overall market.

However, they’re not a bargain either and for a single person to get through 500,000 IDR means eating a meal and drinking 3 alcoholic drinks, which might be fine for a night time session but may be too much for a day within the vicinity of the beach in Seminyak, Bali.

Welcome And Security

The welcome was professional and friendly and while it wasn’t exceptional, it was the kind of thing you’d expect in a Bali hospitality venue.

The security won’t follow you around the venue, but they will conduct a basic bag search as you enter this club and we like that.

We’re big fans of safety and this is one of the ways the clubs can help to ensure everyone inside is safe, including you, your family and friends.

Rating:

Inclusions

If you opt for a minimum-spend seat by the pool, you will be provided with a towel, the other seating has no inclusions.

This is fairly standard for a day club in Bali but there’s no premium or VIP offering which allows you to take a few more perks in exchange for a bigger minimum spend.

We think a lot of clubs in Bali are missing a trick with this, there’s an opportunity here to make customers feel special and boost revenue. A win-win if ever we saw one.

Rating:

Service

One very important part of the beach club experience is service, you want to feel pampered and indulged when you spend $50 AUD ($35 USD) or more on the use of a day bed and some food and drinks.

We found the service at Cocoon to be efficient, attentive and friendly and they did a good job of delivering the kind of hospitality that we expect in Bali.

However, they didn’t stand out as the top tier of service that we’ve encountered either.

Rating:

Entertainment

There’s a pool party every Saturday at this club which is a nice touch. When we visited there was a live DJ spinning up the tunes.

The sports bar onsite has a bunch of big screen TVs for watching games on and they occasionally host events around big sporting events.

Rating:

Pool Quality

The pool was a decent-size compared to the overall space inside the venue which is small-ish in the first place.

It’s also a very clean pool and we think you could swim with confidence here.

However, we’d expect more than one pool in a beach club without a beach and that’s not the case with Cocoon.

Rating:

Menu/Drinks Pricing

We were pleasantly surprised with the pricing at Cocoon which is generally, under the average charged by other beach clubs.

However, as you will see in our next section, we’re not sure that this represents the best value for money on the island.

Rating:

Food And Drink Quality

We ordered a milkshake which didn’t taste of much beyond milk, and that’s always a disappointment as we love milkshakes and they ought to delight your tastebuds.

We also tried a few dishes from the menu and there was nothing that stood out and made us wish we’d ordered more of it.

Our cocktails were decent though with enough alcohol to make them worth the price tage.

Rating:

Sunset View

One big reason that people come to a beach club is for that dramatic sunset view of the sun dropping behind the horizon and lighting up the ocean and sky as it does so.

Sadly, with no view of the beach at Cocoon, you don’t get much of a sunset view, either. Sure, the sky lights up a bit, but it’s just not that incredible tropical sunset that people come on holiday for.

Rating:

Music And Ambiance

We really enjoyed the sounds that the DJ was laying down and overall, we like the vibe inside this day club and sitting out by the pool was fine.

However, we really hate big screens all over a bar, we know, it’s a sports bar, these things are part and parcel of a sports bar, but they kill the pool club vibe and make it feel like you’re somewhere else in the world rather than in Bali.

Rating:

Payment Options

You can pay by cash or card in this establishment easily enough from any part of the club. However, there’s no QRIS payment advertised or local e-wallet support.

Rating:

Exit Process

This is a small pool club near the beach, you walk in and find your seat within a few seconds and leaving is as easy – you just head back out the way you came.

The wait staff will give you a friendly farewell as you depart.

Rating:

Transportation

There is valet parking available at this club if you want to use it (for a small fee) otherwise, you can park nearby and walk to the front door.

However, we have to caution you that it’s not always easy to find a parking spot in this area and you might be better off paying for the valet service.

You can get a Grab or Gojek drop-off easily enough but leaving isn’t as easy. You will find that there are taxi mafia in this area who will hassle you and while you can get a Grab or Gojek pick up, you might have to wait a while due to the traffic.

We recommend booking while you’re inside and then leaving when the driver is close by.

Rating:

Social Media Presence

Cocoon has a social media presence and while it’s not updated super-regularly, it does see an update every week or so, which is better than in some beach clubs.

The pictures on Instagram, etc. are pretty good and do showcase what it’s like inside this club quite well.

Rating:

Other/General Comments

We don’t think you should call your club a “beach club” unless it’s actually on the beach. It’s just not a good look and feels deceptive.

Our Overall Opinion Of Cocoon

Overall, we enjoyed our time at Cocoon, we don’t think this spot in Seminyak, Bali is going to be the big event of most people’s holiday but if you’re staying nearby, it’s a nice place to spend an afternoon.

Rating:
63/100

Final Thoughts On Cocoon

Cocoon is more of a pool club than a beach club but it’s still a nice place to visit if you’re in Seminyak and looking for a place to chill out for the day.

If you’re in Bali for a short time, it shouldn’t be your only or main beach club experience but otherwise, Cocoon is just fine.
