Lovina Beach Club Resort Review: A Hidden Gem In North Bali

You’ve got to drive quite a way from Ngurah Rai International Airport to end up by Lovina Beach but if you do, you might want to visit the Lovina Beach Club at the Lovina Beach Club Resort.

But are you going to be glad to have spent all that time on the road if you do?

Our team set out to find out and this is what they learned about the Lovina Beach Club on their travels.

Introduction – Getting To Lovina Beach Club

You’re going to have to drive a long way to get to Lovina Beach Club from most of the island and while the resort boasts a shuttle service into Singaraja, it won’t pick you up in Canggu.

The beach club and resort offer plenty of parking and you won’t have any trouble being dropped off near the door by Grab or Gojek.

The Lovina Beach Club offers an infinity pool area, the SkySky Restaurant dining experience, bar service and various seating in public areas around the beach.

Our Review Breakdown For Lovina Beach Club

We try to review every beach club in the same fashion on this site as it gives consistency for you, the reader, and it ensures we treat each property fairly.

The team is sent to visit the beach club and each person is asked to assess the club against the 20 criteria listed below.

They then get together after the visit and vote on a final grade from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) for each criterion.

Based on these discussions and votes, a team member compiles the review and once it’s published, it stays in place for, at least, 12 months before we revisit the beach club.

Please note, that in this instance our review is for Lovina Beach Club and not the resort that is attached to it.

Pre-Club Advertising

We’d never heard of the Lovina Beach Club or the Lovina Beach Club Resort before we started this project and that’s because they don’t really advertise.

We understand that this beach club and resort is based in North Bali and thus, advertising may not always deliver value for money for them.

However, it’s advertising that helps to draw in customers and make a beach club busy and without people, the vibe can be a bit flat at times.

Rating:

Location

The Lovina Beach Club is a long way North of the beach towns and Ubud in the rest of Bali.

That means you’re probably going to want to stay overnight if you come to this club.

The good news is that the Lovina Beach area is quite lovely and there are dolphin-watching tours that leave from the beach each day in the early morning.

However, there’s not much within walking distance of this beach club and resort and that means you’re going to need transport to get around.

Rating:

Booking Process & Seating Options

The beach club and resort offers its own website, but you can only book the resort online.

In fact, while you can use the facilities as a walk-in, they don’t even hint that you can book them on their website.

This is a bit annoying as the Lovina Beach Club is a long drive away and we’d like to be able to secure some seats before we commit to the journey.

However, as this isn’t the busiest part of Bali, we’d imagine they have seats at the Lovina Beach Club most of the time, particularly if you arrive earlier in the day.

Rating:

Entry Fee

In common with the best beach clubs in the land, Lovina Beach Club does not charge an entrance fee.

We think you should be able to enter any beach club and sit down and enjoy a drink without paying an additional fee just to walk inside.

It lets you get a feel for this peaceful spot and decide whether you want to spend longer here.

Rating:

Minimum Spend

There is no minimum spend at the Lovina Beach Club and this is both a good thing and a bad thing, it’s a good thing because all you have to do is pay the prices on the menu and you don’t have to spend any more than you want to.

It’s a bad thing because no minimum spend almost always means “no booking beds” and that’s the case here too. This property is a long way from most of the island – we’d be fine to put a few hundred thousand on our account to ensure there was a free seat when we arrived.

A minimum spend helps the guest ensure that their trip is worthwhile and as long as the minimum spend is reasonable, it’s not a burden.

Rating:

Welcome And Security

This is very much a traditional Balinese property and you will be given a fresh and cheery welcome from the staff when you arrive as a guest here.

However, there’s no sign of a security check at the front desk and we wish that there were – security checks keep people safe when they’re at a club.

We’re sure that this resort doesn’t arrange security because it’s remote enough to feel that it’s not necessary, but we think it’s better to err on the safe side all the same.

Rating:

Inclusions

You can have a towel while you lounge around on the day beds and sun loungers here, which is pretty generous given that there’s no minimum spend or entrance fee.

However, there are no additional tiers of inclusion that you can pay for and that means you will need to bring your own waterproof suntan lotion before you dive into the pool, for example.

We think all beach clubs should have a VIP or premier service where you can pay a little extra and get more useful perks as part of the package.

Rating:

Service

The service at this resort is excellent and while it’s not quite on the same level as the very best beach clubs or luxury 5-star resorts, the property can be proud of their staff and the effort they put into making people feel welcome.

They pay attention to the small details that make you feel welcome and pampered while you spend a relaxing day on the sun loungers by the sea.

Rating:

Entertainment

There’s not much in the way of entertainment at Lovina Beach Club Resort but to be fair, we didn’t expect there to be – this is a small beach club attached to a small resort in the middle of nowhere.

There is, apparently, occasional live music but we didn’t encounter any on our trip, instead, there was some quiet background music being piped in and not much more.

Rating:

Pool Quality

We always do our research before visiting a club and somebody had mentioned having their hair change colour in the pool here!

However, on our trip, the pool was clean and the area was well-maintained and everybody kept their hair the same colour as when they had arrived, so we think that guest was probably unlucky or had a hair dye that reacts with chlorine.

Rating:

Menu/Drinks Pricing

The food and drinks here are somewhat cheaper than you’d pay at a beach club in South Bali, but they are quite a bit higher than you’d pay at a restaurant in Lovina.

So, they’re neither excessive nor are they amazing value for money.

Rating:

Food And Drink Quality

There is a fairly diverse menu on offer when it comes to the food at this resort, unfortunately, we weren’t overly impressed with the food when it arrived.

It certainly satisfied our hunger, but it was unmemorable and not the tastiest we’d had in Lovina.

With the SeaSky Restaurant onsite, we’d expected a bit more than what we got.

However, the drinks were more than strong enough and were well-mixed.

Rating:

Sunset View

Many people come to Bali just to witness one of the world’s most amazing sunsets.

Unfortunately, North Bali isn’t a good place to witness the sunset from, it’s nothing like the view you get from the beach clubs on Bali’s Southwest Coast.

You do get a bit of a lightshow in the sky, but it’s not dramatic and you won’t see the sun fall behind the ocean of the horizon either.

Rating:

Music And Ambiance

As we said earlier in our review, there is occasionally some live music here but we didn’t witness it.

On our trip, there was piped background music and that was OK, it wasn’t intrusive and it added to the chilled-out vibe of this club.

Rating:

Payment Options

You can pay be cash or card anywhere in the Lovina Beach Club Resort but we didn’t see any signs for QRIS or e-wallet payments.

Rating:

Exit Process

This place is very small and guests can walk out of the Lovina Beach Club the same way that they came in without getting lost.

The staff will wish you a cheerful farewell as you leave.

Rating:

Transportation

There is very little in the way of Grab and Gojek services in Lovina and you may need to wait a long time at the Lovina Beach Club to get a ride-share.

If you have your own transport, then there is parking onsite.

We’d also note that there is no taxi mafia here either, it’s too remote for them to bother with this location. So, you can’t even catch an overpriced ride if you’re prepared to pay for it to reduce your wait time.

Rating:

Social Media Presence

The Lovina Beach Club Resort maintains a good Instagram account which is regularly updated.

We felt that the images and videos were an accurate reflection of what we’d experienced at the Lovina Beach Club but cannot comment on the pics/vids of the resort itself.

Rating:

Other/General Comments

The Lovina Beach Club reflects well on the Lovina Beach Club Resort and it’s very much a small club aimed at hotel guests.

We think it’s nice that they allow outsiders to come in and use the facilities but they could definitely improve the food which wasn’t so delicious.

Our Overall Opinion Of Lovina Beach Club

If you expect a small hotel beach club at Lovina Beach Club, you won’t be disappointed. This is the epitome of Balinese small business and hospitality.

It doesn’t compare with the big beach clubs like FINNS but then it’s not really trying to – it’s a facility for the resort’s guests and for travellers to drop in to lounge around and eat and drink.

Would we travel to Lovina for Lovina Beach Club? No. But would we visit Lovina Beach Club if we were in town? Yes, very much so. It’s a pleasant day out.

55/100

About The Lovina Beach Club Resort

The Lovina Beach Club Resort features some attractive and very much, Balinese, rooms starting at around 750,000 IDR a night (including tax and services). Each room is relatively spacious and comes with breakfast included.

In addition to the on-site restaurant (the SeaSky Restaurant Lovina), there’s also the Lovina Beach Club and a SPA, where you can enjoy a massage that will make your sleep in their comfortable rooms even more relaxed.

Overall, the Lovina Beach Club Resort offers the kind of beach club and resort facilities that we’d expect from a property near Lovina Beach.

This part of the island is less visited because it’s a long way from the nearest airport and while it’s the perfect setting for chilling with direct access to the beach – it’s not as developed as the beach towns of the south of the island.

Please Note: We have not stayed in this resort during our review of the Lovina Beach Club and are not making any recommendation that you book a room without doing your won research first.

On our visit, we found that the pool was clean and well-maintained which means you can have confidence when you go swimming.

What Can You Do At Lovina Beach Club?

You can go swimming, eat and drink, relax and enjoy the Bali sun at the Lovina Beach Club.

It’s not the biggest beach club facility in Bali, but you won’t be bored if you want relaxation and refreshments.

Yes, children are welcome at the Lovina Beach Club Resort and while there are no special facilities for children at the Lovina Beach Club, there’s plenty of sand and garden for them to play in while they remain under your watchful eye.

Who Owns Lovina Beach Club?

The Lovina Beach Club and Resort is owned by Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu and he is quite a lyrical guy.

He once said that the town of Lovina was “born from the dream of a poet in the 1950s” and that “Lovina” is a combination of “Love” and “Ina” (an abbreviation for Indonesia).

Final Thoughts On Lovina Beach Club

Lovina Beach Club was pretty much what we expected, a small resort beach club by the Indian Ocean. It’s a nice place to spend a few hours in the sun, but not worth a journey north all by itself.

However, given that Lovina Beach is a great place to go dolphin-watching from, if you do find yourself in this part of Bali, you might want to check out Lovina Beach Club.
